Mutual Solitude is a New Zealand landscape painting of Hot Water Beach in the Coromandel, that captures the moment after the sun had sunk below the horizon.
If you are familiar with this beach, you’ll know that it’s popular! At low tide there’s always a crowd of people, digging holes in the sand to enjoy sitting in the natural warm water that fills them.
On this visit, I took a break from the bustle and headed towards the ocean. Looking back I was struck by how tiny the crowd was compared to the vastness of the beach as a whole (the action was just to the left of this painting out of frame!).
This piece expresses a feeling I often notice when on the beach at the fringes of the day. Both companionship and solitude exist simultaneously in a beautiful partnership. The closeness of another person in contrast to the expanse of space all around brings a fresh sense of perspective.
This is a special New Zealand landscape painting for igniting fond beach memories in your own home.
